Lots of New Books

I got two new books to read yesterday: the autobiography of Assata Shakur (no, not Tupac's mother, as I was jokingly reminded) and Communion by bell hooks. I am looking forward to reading both.

Then my sister bought me a copy of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's new book Half of a Yellow Sun, which is a huge hardback. I love reading hardcovers. I almost feel like that much more of a serious reader...... ahem.

I am finishing Fruit of the Lemon, which hasn't been too bad. At least, I think I like it more than I did Small Island. I am reading that alongside Jane Austen's Guide to Dating by Lauren Henderson, which draws lessons on dating (or courting as it was considered way back then) from the novels of Jane Austen. It seems okay so far though I can't say that I've made any earth-shattering discoveries about dating; it is mostly common sense.

I've vowed to be more judicious with my time and do more reading (hmmmm, haven't I been here before).

I'm with you on the hardcover thing. It does give the book (not the reader - teeheehee) an air of seriousness. Oh, and you'll whizz through Yellow Sun in no time. Let us know how you found it when you're done

I finished The Untelling. It was...interesting. I didn't like the main character too much, but somehow the book worked as a whole. I couldn't understand why she kept on lying, and not just about the baby, but about little things...all thru the book she was lying. That was interesting. And I like how she ends up fighting with the poor woman she was trying to "reach out to" and be compassionate towards; finally they both reveal their true selves- they both know they aren't on the same level, they aren't "equals."

Damn, Everchange! You're a super fast reader. Yes, The Untelling is not a difficult read, but still........

I didn't like Aria much either. It's always interesting when you can keep reading a book even while you dislike the main character.

PTS, I'll let you know how I like it.

So, what are you guys reading now?

Ore, right now it's a toss up between The collection of the Autobiographies of Maya Angelou, and Waiting for an Angel. I keep staring at both books, trying to decide which one of them to read first.

would love to know what you think of Half of a Yellow Sun - I have also just bought the hardback and am making my way through, having thought of Purple Hibiscus as a very powerful novel.
