As Another V Day Approaches

I am really blown away by the Valentines Day machinery in action. It seemed that only a few weeks ago, Christmas and New Year was all we heard about on the radio, TV and in magazines and newspapers. So suddenly, that's been replaced by adverts for Valentines Day this, that and the other. There's a Red Ball, something happening for lovers at Ocean View with Chante Moore and Kenny Lattimore, 112, Donnell Jones and a host of other international and of course some of our own home-grown stars performing. I walked by the Bola 3 jewellery store at The Palms this evening and saw that its floor was strewn with red rose petals. Waoh!!!, as trashy Nigerian mags would exclaim.

As usual, I ask "Was it like this when I was growing up?" I guess so (sans the international artistes visiting our shores perhaps). I've always been somewhat derisive about the day, so maybe I just never paid much attention.

It seemed like only yesterday when I wrote about the last V-Day. That's one nice thing about keeping a blog - you can track many of the events in your life (or at least, since you started blogging). So many minutae of where I was, what I was thinking, doing or planning are recorded for me to read. Okay, it's really scary how the last year zoomed by so fast.

We just import stuff wholesale in Naija. That said, I will miss this year's celebration, and I'm not happy about it...

Oh Val's day. It was such a huge FESTIVAL back in Naija especially on the campuses. Some "corporate" dudes will come all the way from Lagos to impress girls in Ife and of course oppress the poor male students while they are at it too...Those days were fun!

Guess what I was about to post the exact same message I posted on your Val's Day blog last year and then I thought- that sounds familiar and sure enough there it was.

I do remember when the tide turned-yes we used to do Val's Day in secondary school and all that but it wasn't until the early nineties that it went stratospheric- I remember being caught for nearly an hour one night in a solid traffic jam in 1993 or 4 on Adeniran Ogunsanya in Surulere because all the restaurants were packed with people celebrating "Val"

LOL @ Waoh!! This is my first "hitched" V-Day ever! I am so tempted to abandon my values and jump into the roses/red wine foray....Nah! We're doing ours in March :)

Enjoy your day, Everchange. As contrived as Vals day appears to some , I guess it can actually be a lot of fun.

uknaija, even this post is so similar to what I wrote last year, but I still wanted to say something about it. Last Vals day here was very rainy. The traffic was horrendous. I went out for dinner and I think we ended up eating pretty late because the combination of the rain and amount of cars on the raod just created terrible driving conditions.
