Essence Magazine - Ugh!
After much anticipation, I
finally got the latest issue of Essence in Accra (more about my trip later) and can I say
What a big waste of time and money! Don't quite know what's happening with the magazine, but it's not good. All the little things that set Essence aside from the mass of 'women's magazines' out there are slowly disappearing and what we're left with is an increasingly bland Black version of Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Marie Claire, etc. Well, thank goodness for Nigeria's own

I'm glad you found my blog. I've been reading yours for a long while, though I'm yet to comment in it. I like it a lot. I'm happy that you will be visiting Nigeria soon. It will be great to have you here.
Anyway, back to Essence: yes, it's very bad now. I don't have any more words for it. I still have a copy of the very first issue I bought back in 1997 and it was filled with so many more socially-relevant articles. I learnt so much about how different Black communities lived. Now, I get tips on how to make sex last longer in EVERY freaking issue.
Hey Ore, a little tip... Switch to 'O' the Oprah magazine. And no I don't have shares in it :-)but its a great read and the quality of the articles are way up there.
Oh, I already get O. I get it almost every month. I agree that the writing is very, very good plus I learn so much. I am yet to get the January issue though.
Between my sister and I, we get Essence, O, Marie Claire, In Style, Vanity Fair, True Love, Genevieve, Glamour almost everymonth. Not to mention the gossip rags my sister gets to keep up to date with what's happening in Nigeria. It's crazy, I tell you.

Love your blog. I must say, i am really impressed by True Love, excellent mag! I only have ever read 2 copies, first was when i was in NG visiting. All the feature personalities u can actually relate to them. I will keep reading...

I'm not sure. I don't have the mag near me to check. I did a quick online search and didn't find anything. I assume that you've tried that already. Will let you know if I find anything.
